Do Steel Buildings Need to Be Built on Flat Land?

Get Your Questions Answered

Steel buildings have lots of features that set them apart from more conventional construction, but they are in many ways similar to any construction. Like any building, steel construction does need a level base – obviously, you don’t need the entire property where the steel building is going to be erected to be completely flat, but the area underneath the building needs to be perfectly level. There are several ways to achieve a suitably level base:

  • Excavation – if the soil permits it, you can create a level installation surface by excavating and moving earth to create a suitably strong foundation for your building. While doing so, make sure that sufficient attention is paid to soil drainage and you will also need to have your plot evaluated to make sure it is sufficiently stable for your building;
  • Building a ground-mount platform – if your plot is on rocky soil that cannot be excavated on, you can build a platform to create the level surface necessary for your building. The process requires much less digging than the previous method, but you will need to dig out holes for the poles on which the platform will be built and to which your building will be anchored.
